Design and Planning for Home Remodeling

Successful remodeling begins with a clearly defined scope, realistic priorities, and a plan that responds to the existing home. Whether you are considering an addition, kitchen remodel, in-law suite, or whole-home renovation, design and planning help identify the structural, functional, aesthetic, and budget considerations that will shape the project.

Star Remodeling coordinates the design and planning process with homeowners, architects, designers, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and other professionals as required by the project.

Building on a remodeling legacy that began in 1958, our team helps homeowners move from an initial idea toward a detailed, buildable project plan.

Historic Porch Design and Restoration

This historic porch restoration demonstrates the design, planning, and construction coordination required to update an older structure while respecting its architectural character.

Our Remodeling Planning Process

1. 15-Minute Discovery Call

The first step is a brief Discovery Call to learn about your home, the type of project you are considering, your priorities, anticipated timing, and preliminary investment range.

This conversation helps determine whether the project appears to be a reasonable fit for Star Remodeling and whether it makes sense to continue to the next step.

2. Project Assessment

When a project appears to be a reasonable fit, the next step may be a Project Assessment. This allows us to look more closely at the property, existing conditions, proposed scope, and practical considerations that may affect the project.

The assessment may include discussion of layout concerns, structural conditions, building systems, zoning, permitting, access, and the professionals who may need to be involved.

3. Design & Planning Agreement

Projects that require detailed design development, selections, structural planning, permitting, or substantial scope definition may proceed under a Design & Planning Agreement.

Depending on the project, this phase may include:

  • Existing-condition review
  • Project goals and scope development
  • Preliminary layouts and design concepts
  • Architectural or engineering coordination
  • Material and finish selections
  • Zoning and permitting research
  • Constructability review
  • Budget and investment alignment
  • Detailed scope development
  • Preparation for a fixed-price proposal

The purpose of this phase is to replace assumptions with clearly defined information before detailed pricing and construction commitments are made.

Planning for the Existing Home

Remodeling design must account for more than how the finished space will look. Existing framing, foundations, rooflines, utilities, floor levels, windows, access, drainage, and connections between old and new construction may all affect the final plan.

Star Remodeling works with the appropriate project professionals to develop solutions that respond to these conditions while supporting the homeowner’s priorities.
